Rialto Market has over 1,000 years of history. It overlooks the Grand Canal, it’s situated under the monumental arches of palaces that were designed by the most influencial architects of history. The stonewalls of Rialto witness international prestige and hard-working vitality.
Rialto is rich in houses, craftsmen shops, osterie, public offices; the whole area is characterised by the strong presence of residents and commercial activities for them, a particular condition which determines great vitality and reasonable prices. Moreover, Rialto is crossed by an intense touristic flow and it surely is one of the hottest spots in Venice nightlife.
All activities are localized ina concentrated area: there you can see the old faces of fishmongers of the Pescaria; the affable smile of the elegant woman who sells spices; the eyes of the souvenirs dealers – which probably saw any kind of people and situations; the wrinkled faces of some men in the taverns; the colourful young mums buying fruits; the telescopic lenses of tourists who take pictures of eels and sea basses; the clinking glasses of Prosecco and the unexpressive looks of groups on holiday. Crossing Rialto Market in the morning is one of the best ways to get to know the real soul of Venice.
From this point of view it’s easier to remember that the insula realtina was the center of the immense commercial empire of the Serenissima, capital city of a state which was very clever in foreign affairs and which 800 years ago held offices, banks, botteghe and osterie. Rialto was crossed every day by thousands of people of different nationalities, as well as it is nowadays.
Our aim is to narrate the memory to emphasize the identity of a place that has almost 2,000 years of history, to highlight its rich and complex nature and to spread this information so that it takes the place of all banal clichés about the most imagined city in the world. Rialto Cuore della Città was born out of a plan of re-design of the area, a project started years ago by the Comune di Venezia to substain the economic development. Particular attention was given to the development of the Market, considered representative of the city identity, a place in charge of promoting local products and spreading traditional values.
In an attempt to substain the commercial activities also by seizeing the opportunities of touristic development, the projects aims at identifying a touristic offer connected to the quality and excellence that have always characterised the ancient Market. The offer has to be sustainable and in total armony with the residential vocation of Rialto area, in order to safeguard the quality of life.
Planning, storytelling, web 2.0: graphic design applied to territorial identity, actions and events were planned thanks to dialogues with the residents and merchants associations and with the active forces of the area. A participative process that gathers and distributes information, images and resources. A process that was welcomed enthousiasticly by people, and that is destined to continue in time.
