Rialto Market has over 1,000 years of history. It overlooks the Grand Canal, it’s situated under the monumental arches of palaces that were designed by the most influencial architects of history. The stonewalls of Rialto witness international prestige and hard-working vitality.

Rialto is rich in houses, craftsmen shops, osterie, public offices; the whole area is characterised by the strong presence of residents and commercial activities for them, a particular condition which determines great vitality and reasonable prices. Moreover, Rialto is crossed by an intense touristic flow and it surely is one of the hottest spots in Venice nightlife.

All activities are localized ina concentrated area: there you can see the old faces of fishmongers of the Pescaria; the affable smile of the elegant woman who sells spices; the eyes of the souvenirs dealers – which probably saw any kind of people and situations; the wrinkled faces of some men in the taverns; the colourful young mums buying fruits; the telescopic lenses of tourists who take pictures of eels and sea basses; the clinking glasses of Prosecco and the unexpressive looks of groups on holiday. Crossing Rialto Market in the morning is one of the best ways to get to know the real soul of Venice.

From this point of view it’s easier to remember that the insula realtina was the center of the immense commercial empire of the Serenissima, capital city of a state which was very clever in foreign affairs and which 800 years ago held offices, banks, botteghe and osterie. Rialto was crossed every day by thousands of people of different nationalities, as well as it is nowadays.

Our aim is to narrate the memory to emphasize the identity of a place that has almost 2,000 years of history, to highlight its rich and complex nature and to spread this information so that it takes the place of all banal clichés about the most imagined city in the world. Rialto Cuore della Città was born out of a plan of re-design of the area, a project started years ago by the Comune di Venezia to substain the economic development. Particular attention was given to the development of the Market, considered representative of the city identity, a place in charge of promoting local products and spreading traditional values.

In an attempt to substain the commercial activities also by seizeing the opportunities of touristic development, the projects aims at identifying a touristic offer connected to the quality and excellence that have always characterised the ancient Market. The offer has to be sustainable and in total armony with the residential vocation of Rialto area, in order to safeguard the quality of life.

Planning, storytelling, web 2.0: graphic design applied to territorial identity, actions and events were planned thanks to dialogues with the residents and merchants associations and with the active forces of the area. A participative process that gathers and distributes information, images and resources. A process that was welcomed enthousiasticly by people, and that is destined to continue in time.

The website geolocalizes on a Google Map the services, events of the programme, interesting spots and memories from the past, so that people can have a first approach with the history of Rialto and Venice, through its places.
The Blog allows the protagonists of Rialto to talk. In this way, the relationship with the territory and with the city are promoted.

The website is designed to distribute information on all faces of the digital identity of Rialto, such as the pages on the most important social networks, like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Friendfeed and YouTube.

The pages are animated by texts, comments, photos and videos and there is an intense communication with search engines, thematic channels dedicated to travel and free time, touristic websites and online journalism. This activities are spreading Rialto name on the net, linking it to the events of our programme and to the core values expressed on the website: quality, excellence, culture, tradition, art, refinement and quality of life.

Next steps will be the participation to European projects and to international networks of Markets, collaborations plans with the city instituions of tourism and culture, the promotion of the initiative in fairs and international events devoted to tourism.

Our blog is supposed to become more and more and instrument to encourage dialogue with and between the population and the merchants, a vehicle of updates and initiatives, a place for discussion and to share information.

Lorenzo Cinotti from Fnv interviews Ezio Micelli, associate professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University IUAV of Venice where he teaches courses in Project Quantity Surveying and Economic Valuation.

Lorenzo Cinotti: I was struck by your interview in the Corriere del Veneto last year where you referred to Rialto as one of Venice’s iconic sites.

Ezio Micelli: That rose-tinged impression that many people have of Venice, tourists in particular, of a kitsch city, the city of love, has no foundation in reality. It struck me that they perceive Rialto as a place rich in local colour when it was actually one of the key sites in the development of capitalism. Braudel recalls it in his history of capitalism, describing it as one of the nodes where our capitalist development radiated outwards, continuing via Belgium, London, New York and, who knows, possibly even heading for Shanghai today. We need to remember that a place like this is not merely a pleasant spot for tourists.

Looking around you will see signs that evoke memories: if you look up to your left as you come down the Rialto bridge you will see the statue of Justice. The themes of fairness and exchange and the market’s idea of rules take the shape of physical symbols. Although all this capitalism has since disappeared, leaving only a fruit and vegetable market in its wake, I think we should recall the almost epic relation that linked one of the city’s sites and the history of the world; it’s a little like the Punta della Dogana, now transformed into a place of artistic experience, which was once a docking place where one would land, present one’s papers, declare what was in the hold and continue on one’s journey.

I think that the awareness of the key role of the economy seems to have vanished in Rialto. Obviously this is also a tourist site, tourism is this century’s Eldorado, the leading industry in our country, in the Veneto for sure. The awareness that this is a place of exchange, of permanent negotiations, of dealings, takes us back to the image of the city as an open place; an idea that provides food for thought, especially in the North-East of Italy with its characteristic tendency towards closure. Venice is a city founded as a place of exchange, a market open to the world-economy – as Braudel would say – and must continue to be so.
Rialto is also striking in terms of its structure, which reveals a building density that was the maximum permitted by the technology of the times, that is, five to six floors. Let’s also take a look at the distances between buildings: if you go to Dorsoduro you’ll soon notice how they spread further apart. Rialto has been subjected to major building development and speculation and the aesthetics of the site raises important questions. We are faced with the paradox of a speculation process generating beauty; here in Rialto, like in New York or Shanghai, speculation used for motives of production ends up by creating beauty.

Lorenzo Cinotti: A beauty that is also synonymous with power, like St Mark’s Basilica.

Ezio Micelli: The beauty and economic strength that materialise in a space always raise questions. We love things that did not come into being thanks to the graces of some art patron, but were produced by a combination of speculation and contradictory conflicts. All this left something behind that we believe to be extraordinarily beautiful. A beauty that is not intentional.

Lorenzo Cinotti: A beauty generated by entrepreneurial activities.

Ezio Micelli: A beauty that was undoubtedly generated by a balance that ensured that contradictory impulses could produce an outstanding result.

Lorenzo Cinotti: The theme that you alluded to earlier, that of the open market, I think it also evokes the idea of the exchange of goods that is also an exchange of ideas and cultures.

Ezio Micelli: It is a metaphor that allows us to rethink our world. Venice undoubtedly represents a space of interaction for northern Italy. Other places offer different ideas of development but this city always raises questions because it has made openness its guiding principle; it is a city that has the ability to reconcile opposites, transforming this quality into a distinguishing feature. The very activity of doing business tends to make you tolerant. In fact the European Union came into being because the only way to put an end to fighting between France and Germany was to transform them into commercial partners. Venice is a city that teaches us that one way of preventing East and West from coming to blows is to entwine their destinies. How can we do that? Often by means of money.

Lorenzo Cinotti: In your opinion, how could we use the signs of the past, giving them a contemporary twist? I’m talking about reactivating the layers of symbolic meaning that have built up over time in Rialto.

Ezio Micelli: The city must keep its own identity alive: Rialto is a market; it must maintain its mercantile character but above all its role as a cross-roads and melting pot. To do so you require two key concepts: entertainment and culture. Places that speak for themselves, physically expressing dialogue, that are an intersection of cultures that complete each other must become the physical location of a culture of relations with others: The historic centre of Venice is one such place. Relationships can be created by means of different activities, in “high” or “low” forms, it doesn’t matter. I’m thinking of two recent events involving locals: one was the 40xVenezia party in the Pescheria at Rialto, presented as an occasion for reappropriating available spaces, and the other the Plessi installation at St Mark’s – Paradiso e Inferno (Paradise and Hell) – which involved the entire piazza, bringing contemporary art into people’s daily lives.

The tendency of such events is to make the area fun for young people, which is fine because it gives them a meeting place, but they fall short of completing the range of entertainment and cultural activities. I repeat, we are not just talking about elitist forms of expression here: the idea of intelligent popular culture that is different, shared, is suited to the market because it is a place with a popular dimension. This would allow culture to move away from designated places like the Biennale, from sophisticated forms and head for the market which belongs to everyone.

Lorenzo Cinotti: Integration from the grass-roots.

Ezio Micelli: Turning our attention back to the city of Venice and above all to the Rialto neighbourhood allows us to widen our conception of such places, which represent real opportunities in a city as rich as Venice. Although many people were initially worried about liberating the Rialto market, the urban void turned into an extraordinary platform for collective social life, capable of hosting the mayor’s party as well as the aperitif ritual. Of course, Rialto works because it is a space dense in symbolic meaning: something can always happen in a void like that. There are other urban voids that never take off, like St Mark’s Square.

Lorenzo Cinotti: Maybe the problem there is the lack of residential fabric. In Rialto the market and shops hold the residents together.

Ezio Micelli: A void like that, extraordinarily, almost awe-inspiringly beautiful and not exploited, represents a big problem for cities, because in Italy the piazza still plays a key role. The experience of recent years has taught us that shopping centres cannot replace the piazza: everybody goes to shopping centres to spend money and do shopping, but when you want an aperitif you always choose the piazza, a place of historic memory and shared experience. The same things came to mind with regard to Mestre: at a certain hour the city empties; although it is crossed by filling and emptying flows the key of interpretation is always the same: we meet up in places where a common experience has deposited in the doors, walls and pavements and where the sensation of an encounter lies in a truly shared idea belonging to the cultural consumption to which we all aspire.

Similarly the idea that we now have of art no longer corresponds to the large-scale museum exhibition, which has almost turned into a consumer event; the experience of art is more shared, more of a performance. If we move onto this level, commerce and entertainment will be forced to follow the trend. I should underline that the ability to attract people is no longer linked to the quality of the container. The bar or restaurant, or whatever, can reason on an individual basis once they attain a level of excellence, or when the places concerned can survive regardless of what surrounds them.

In Rialto you have to adopt a different approach: you enter a neighbourhood and choose the venue you like the best. As a result, owners cannot just rely upon their own business activity but need the support of the entire neighbourhood. I’m thinking of Rialto, but also of Campo Santa Margherita. For example, Santa Marta may have extraordinary potential but lacks critical mass; it has hardly any bars or restaurants, no urban void equipped with qualities. A place like that lacks the social dimension; the lack of bounded, ordered, geometrically closed spaces represents a problem.

Lorenzo Cinotti: Ten years ago we organised an encounter aimed at returning the Erbaria to the city; we invited shop-keepers, Insula and Consorzio Venezia Nuova, representatives from the Venice City Council and from other institutions. There were almost fifty people and I have to say that the information exchange worked well. There were local citizens and administrators and the atmosphere undoubtedly helped matters.

Ezio Micelli: Exactly, places like that are very attractive. An economy with a large segment of older persons does not attribute an exclusive value to money and spaces of pure economic exchange. It gives value to participation, to a high qualifying moment in a suitable place. It should be stressed that such places should be enhanced, space is not inherently beautiful but must be embellished otherwise it just becomes an abandoned void and Venice has enough of those kind of spaces already, abandoned and empty since time immemorial. Places need meaning and meaning is created by means of activities organised within their spaces.

Ezio Micelli is associate professor at the Faculty of Architecture of University IUAV of Venice where he teaches courses in Project Quantity Surveying and Economic Valuation.

Two months of events, theatre to narrate Rialto history, jazz music and activities for children have drawn the attention of people to the most important and oldest “piazza” of Venice: Campo San Giacometo, returned to people in 2009, after almost fifty years of oblivion behind a series of stalls.

The events were documented with videos and photos and narrated in Italian and English on the 2.0 website rialtovenezia.com. Events have drown the attention of press and blogs from different countries, presenting Rialto as a precious, accessible area, historic but lively and rich in opportunities for fun.
Activities in the Market offered the chance to think about the developing perspectives of an area that has been able to maintain its residential and popular features notwithstanding the daily touristic flow.

The website is still promoting Rialto, giving visibility to the cultural activities of the city associations and collaborating with Venetian photographers, writers and travellers who are contributing to the project with their different visions of Rialto.
All information is geolocalized on a Google Map and distributed on different social networks.

Nossa Alma Canta will perform live tomorrow in Campo Bella Vienna at 6.30 pm. The concert is the first event in the penultimate weekend of Rialto Cuore della Città.

After 10 years of Bossanova and many releases, for their fourth official album “I was made for Bossa” Nossa Alma Canta have been trying to mix the brasilian background with the modern music culture: they mash up pop-rock songs from the 70’s on, original songs and brasilian classic music. The Kiss, Terence T. D’Arby, Lenny Kravitz, Prince, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Eagles find new expressions, a language that inserts percussion grooves and electronic elements into the brasilian moods.

The concert is part of the events of Rialto Cuore della Città, the project to sustain Rialto and its Market, promoted by the Comune di Venezia and the Assessorato alle Attività Produttive.
